The EasyHOA Story

How serving on an HOA board inspired innovative solutions for self-managed HOAs

EasyHOA Story

We have always thought that sharing how a company gets started is a pretty neat way of understanding that company’s roots, principles, and values. Here at EasyHOA we thought that it would be beneficial for the world to know how we got started 🙂

The idea and the concept of creating an easy-to-use HOA software started in 2019. In 2019, a guy named Jimmy Sorenson from Salt Lake City, Ut was appointed as a board member of his 120 unit community in a small town called Washington, UT. Jimmy quickly realized that being on a board of an HOA was fun but it came with its challenges. Some of the biggest challenges that he recognized revolved around communications, violations, and transparency. As time evolved, Jimmy realized that community member in his neighborhood were not “in-the-loop” when it came to what the CC&Rs contained. He also noticed that most homeowners didn’t know the financials of the HOA. As he served, he observed that board member communications were simply done through email making it hard for Jimmy and the other board members to monitor and track “action items” so things discussed began to fall through the cracks. After experiencing this he quickly thought… “There has to be a better way”.

At that time, Jimmy and some of his close friends owned a software company called Easy Storage Solutions. Easy Storage Solutions www.easystoragesolutions.com is a self self storage management software that was founded by Jimmy Sorenson and Ken Hendrickson in 2008. Jimmy and Ken started Easy Storage because back then, they noticed that:

  1. It was hard to rent a storage unit online.
  2. It was hard for renters to get information about possible vacancies in their.
  3. Ken and Jimmy both knew it was difficult to manage a storage unit facility with a pen and paper.

After leading the charge as the industry’s first fully web-based self storage management software and growing that company to have over 5,000 storage facilities nationwide using its platform, Kan and Jimmy sold Easy Storage solutions in 2020. As of 2023, Easy Storage Solutions now has almost 10,000 facilities using its cutting edge technology.

Jimmy and Ken’s combined experience of 25 yrs in the software world coupled with Jimmy’s observations while serving on the board in his community, helped them to realize there was a need to build out an HOA management software for small to medium-sized HOAs. After selling Easy Storage solutions in 2020, they decided to “round up the troops” and build out EasyHOA with some of their friends and family members: Nate Hendrickson, Garrett Walpole, and Trent Staheli. The whole team knew that Easy Storage Solutions was successful because they always put the customer first and they built the software around the customer’s needs. For that reason, when they started EasyHOA, they made sure to keep those same principles as the foundation of their new endeavor!

Nate Hendrickson- Was an owner at Easy Storage Solutions and was a big part of Easy Storage Solution’s success as he essentially ran the support team and customer relations for its 5,000+ self-storage customers.

Garrett Walpole- Ran the sales floor at Easy Storage Solutions and with his 13+ years of sales experience was a vital part of helping Easy Storage achieve the 10,000 facility count that it now holds.

Trent Staheli- Has been developing software for 20+ years and was a huge asset to the EasyHOA team as it built out its software development team.
